So here is what I've gotten:
A change of the preferences to the following:
1. Siblings of existing LASD students
2. Up to 50% of the remaining available spots in each grade for the former Bullis-Purissima attendance area as defined by LASD in 2003 (this represents roughly the northern part of LAH, plus all of Los Altos which is west of Foothill and North of El Monte-- e.g., the University/Orange Avenue area).
3. Students residing within the boundaries of LASD;
4. Siblings of existing BCS students who reside outside the boundaries of the LASD;
and
5. All other students.
This is NOT meaning that all LAH enrollees are getting preferential treatment. It means that up to half of the available slots (after siblings currently enrolled, regardless of residence but within the LASD) in a given enrollment year will be given to the former BP enrollment area. If there aren't that many former BP enrollees, those slots will go back to standard preferences.
Additionally, BCS has added an additional kindergarten next year to accommodate the increased enrollment interest.
All of this is done with the intent that those original families who supported BCS can still have access to the school and not disrupt the growing interest throughout the rest of the district.

Hi Amanda and other concerned citizens,
It seems there is some confusion about the exact amendment to the BCS charter, so I have copied the text from their own web page here: If the number of students who wish to attend exceeds the school's capacity, then enrollment is determined by a public random drawing. If a random drawing is necessary, SCCOE authorized enrollment preferences are applied based on the following hierarchy within each grade level: Siblings of current BCS students who reside within the Los Altos School District (LASD) have first preference. 50% of the available openings for students residing in the former Bullis-Purissima School attendance area as defined by LASD in 2003 have the next priority. Other LASD students have the next priority. Siblings of current BCS students who reside out-of-district are given priority after that. Out-of-district students without BCS siblings receive the final priority. When will the lottery occur? February 2008. (End of web site quote) Please note that this amendment has ALREADY been approved by Santa Clara County as of last week and will be in effect immediately for the 2008 enrollment season, regardless of BCS's current OR future location. BP's ostensible rationale (as stated to Santa Clara County) for favoring the former BP residents is to insure a active and dependable volunteer base. I suppose only people in the Hills can be counted on to volunteer at their child's school? |
